Exclusive Interview: Phil Powers, Scrooge in ‘A Christmas Carol’
Traditions feel most important during the holiday season. For some, it’s decorating the house and baking a slew of Christmas cookies, which, don’t get me wrong, we participate in those. However, in my neck of the woods, it’s seeing Meadow Brook’s annual A Christmas Carol! For 42 years, this playhouse has brought Christmas excitement to the people of Metro Detroit with its take on the classic Charles Dickens tale of Ebenezer Scrooge’s change of heart after some ghostly visits!
There’s nothing like a ghost story to pair with Christmas cheer to remind people of the importance of being kind, especially during this time of year. Beginning a few weeks back and running through December 22, A Christmas Carol is a staple holiday experience, one that we enjoy participating in year after year.
Recently, we sat down with Phil Powers, who has taken over the role of Scrooge this year, and discussed his experience in A Christmas Carol. Listen as he breaks down how the show has changed over the years, especially under the new guidance of director Travis Walter, what his approach to Scrooge is like, and how he attempts to find the humor in such a grumpy character.
